Gruntworks Media’s 10 Dumbest Fucking Things the U.S. Military Ever Did #8 – USAF bombs Italy 40 years after end of WWII

The flight of US fighter-bombers dropped some ordnance on the unidentified object and proceeded to level several targets in Libya as part of OPERATION EL DORADO CANYON.

In 1986 the Reagan Administration was furious with Colonel Muamar Gaddafi. Intercepted diplomatic cables had caught the Libyan dictator celebrating and congratulating the perpetrators of the La Belle Discotheque bombing that killed 2 off-duty US Army NCOs, 3 German nationals, and wounded dozens of people in a West Berlin night club popular with American servicemen. The perpetrators were Libyan Agents from the Libyan Embassy in Communist East Germany attacking US personnel due to increasing tensions between the US and Libya. The US response was simple: bomb the living shit out of Libya. Some conflicts over airspace usage by NATO ‘allies’ resulted in a flight of US Air Force F-111F Aardvark supersonic attack aircraft being launched from

Great Britain and flying some 1,300 nautical miles outside their original flight path to avoid the air space of France, Spain, and Italy who had denied the use to US Forces in attacking Libya. This new flight path took them directly over the Mediterranean Sea in the Straight of Sicily in route to the Libyan Capital, Tripoli. While flying just south of the Italian no-fly zone imposed on them, the pilots looked down over the water and saw a shocking sight. A dark linear object venting steam – A Libyan Submarine! This report was met with incredulous shock by their higher headquarters. Libya has Submarines?!? Well, Colonel Gaddafi had just made deals with the USSR and declared his country to be in the process of becoming another Arab Socialist regime, so… that probably explained how Libya could have gotten a sub – maybe. Anyway, fuck it, bomb it and proceed to your original targets. The flight of US fighter-bombers dropped some ordnance on the unidentified object and proceeded to level several targets in Libya as part of OPERATION EL DORADO CANYON.

Well… it turns out that “Dark Object” was actually the sovereign Italian territory of Graham Island, AKA Isola Ferdinandea – a low-lying landmass with an active volcano (Mount Empedocles) that usually sits several meters under the water, but occasionally (under the right tides) presents itself above water – and the US Air Force had just bombed it.

Yeah… The whole thing ended up being a public relations disaster for the US as left-wingers across the world rallied to condemn the US action against Colonel Gaddafi and his state-sponsored terrorism. Gaddafi claimed that his 15-month-old adopted daughter (who may have never actually existed) had been killed by the American bombs and that really pissed off all the Socialists As if they needed another reason to hate America? Then the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 41/38 which “condemns the military attack perpetrated against the Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya on 15 April 1986; which constitutes a violation of the Charter of the United Nations and of international law.” The bombing of Italy passed by the public consciousness since no one died because of it. Still, the US Air Force did bomb a sovereign US ally in peacetime… but that got lost in all the other bullshit over America bombing a dictator who sent terrorists to kill our boys. Seriously, fuck the UN.

You thought Sky Penis was dumb?
