So last week we left off with the shepherds being told of the birth of Jesus.
Isaiah 7:13-14 Then he said, “Listen now, O house of David! Is it too slight a thing for you to try the patience of men, that you will try the patience of my God as well? “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. (NASB)
Off to the East, three Magi, not magicians in our sense; but learned, noble, upright men that had studied Hebrew scriptures. Surely the prophecies stuck out.
But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel” (Micah 5:2, NKJV; see also Matthew 2:5, 6).
A Star shall come out of Jacob; a Scepter shall rise out of Israel” (Numbers 24:17, NKJV
While it isn’t known how many exactly showed up, tradition states three because of the gifts brought. Gold, Frankenincense and Myrrh. Those gifts are indicative of the Messiah as King (gold), Frankenincense (Healer), and Myrrh (burial ointment/perfume)
Now when these guys showed up they went to Herod and asked where the King of the Jews was. Herod questions them on their knowledge…gets paranoid, and thinks he’ll have the Magi find Jesus and have him killed. The Magi figure out the Roman brain of Herod and pop smoke to Bethlehem. There they honor and worship Jesus. They present the gifts and tell Joseph and Mary what Herod is all about.
They tell the new parents, grab your go bags and move out quick, fast and in a hurry. The Magi: Melichor, Gaspbar, and Balthazar beat feet on a different path home. Herod finds out, orders all males kids below two years old to be killed. Mary and Joseph and Baby Infantry Jesus all head to Egypt.
So there it is. The birth laid out simple. I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas or Hannukah at this point. Next week I’ll be with my in laws and possibly riding out an ice storm.
Blessings to you and your family
