Manhattan, via Gruntworks Media Bunker – At approximately 3:10 p.m. (New York Time), a terrorist drove onto a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center memorial in Manhattan. The vehicle struck several people before he came to a sudden stop after striking a school bus and another vehicle. The driver of the vehicle then exited the vehicle with what appeared to be two weapons. The terrorist was then shot by police and taken to a nearby hospital.
Police have stated that eight people were killed in the incident and another eleven were injured. No details on the injuries have been released at this time.
The FBI and local law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident as a terror attack.
The New York Police Department has identified the driver of the vehicle as 29-year-old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, an Uzbekistani immigrant. He entered the United States in 2010 under Obama immigration policy. Saipov is described as a devout Muslim who had lived in Tampa, Florida, but had recently moved to New Jersey.
NYPD commissioner James O’Neill stated that “Today there was a loss of innocent life in lower Manhattan,” and that even though initially the motive behind the attack was unknown, the incident was being investigated as a terrorist attack.
Mayor Bill de Blasio also stated that eight people have been killed in the attack and that several others were injured. In a statement Blasio, said that the attack was “a very painful day in our city” and called it a “cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians.
Officials have confirmed that that the incident is being investigated as a terror attack. Law enforcement sources have aso confirmed that some of the witness have stated that they heard the suspect (Saipov) yelling “Allahu Akbar” as he exited the vehicle. Initial reports indicated that the suspect had weapons on him as a he exited the vehicle. Police have not states that the weapons were toys or as police as have described “imitation firearms.” The weapons that were recovered at the incident were a pellet gun and a paintball gun that were visually modified to look as real weapons.
The method of this attack is similar to recent terror attacks in London and Nice, France. In these attacks the terrorists used vehicle to targeted innocent civilians. In this attack the suspect used a Home Depot rental truck.
After the suspect was shot and taken into custody the area was secured by the NYPD. Emergency workers declared six people dead at the scene, two others were later pronounced dead at the hospital. Eleven other victims were taken to the hospital with what police described serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Record checks revealed that Saipov had several interactions with law enforcement in several states. Saipov had several traffic citations issued in Missouri and Pennsylvania. He had also been arrested by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in October 2016, for not showing up to court for a misdemeanor offense.
Officials have confirmed that investigators found a handwritten note in which Saipov had declared his allegiance to the Islamic State. Officials have stated that at this time, the police do not believe that there was anybody else involved in the attack. Officials are calling the incident a “Lone Wolf” terror attack, because they believe Saipov acted alone with no support from any other terrorist organization.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is taking over the lead in the investigation.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says the President has been briefed by White House chief of staff John Kelly and “will be continually updated as more details are known.”
The terrorist is expected to survive the gunshot wound to his abdomen. This means that investigator will be able to question the suspect on possible motives and any help he may have had.
This investigation on ongoing and more updates will follow as they become available.
